AlgonquinsThe term "Anishinabe", which means "true people", in the Algonquin language, is what the Algonquins call themselves. The Anishinabeg of Quebec still use their mother tongue, which is spoken by 60% of the population. Proudly preserving their traditions, the Anishinabeg remain very close to their ancestral way of life. Since some do not have access to modern conveniences, the Kitcisakik people continue to practice a traditional lifestyle.

Referred to as “Indians” and then “American Indians” a little later on, today they are more accurately referred to as the “First Nations” for the indigenous or aboriginal peoples of Canada, “Inuit” for the Aboriginal people of Northern Canada and “Métis" for the people of mixed ancestry.
