AtikamekwOnce called "Round Heads", because of the shape of their headdress, the Atikamekw have been known by their original name, which means "whitefish", since 1970. They are famous for their expert birch bark work, from which they build canoes and make other practical household objects. Today, the nation concentrates its efforts on economic development while maintaining respect for traditions and the environment.

Referred to as “Indians” and then “American Indians” a little later on, today they are more accurately referred to as the “First Nations” for the indigenous or aboriginal peoples of Canada, “Inuit” for the Aboriginal people of Northern Canada and “Métis" for the people of mixed ancestry.
