MicmacThe Micmacs were the first to encounter the European newcomers in the 16th century. Their fishing and navigation skills made them of invaluable assistance to explorers and traders. Today, the Micmacs promote their history through the development of ancestral sites and practice of traditional salmon fishing.

Referred to as “Indians” and then “American Indians” a little later on, today they are more accurately referred to as the “First Nations” for the indigenous or aboriginal peoples of Canada, “Inuit” for the Aboriginal people of Northern Canada and “Métis" for the people of mixed ancestry.
