Lanaudière, LaurentidesEncompassing the urban vitality along the shores of the St. Lawrence River and the vast sparsely inhabited lands to the north, these two regions cover a vast expanse of contrasting and colourful terrain, with mountains and lush plains, thousands of lakes and immense forests. Very close to Montreal, along the shores of Lac des Deux Montagnes, the Kanesatake Mohawks continue to live their traditional sedentary life, whereas the Manawan Atikamekw pursue their nomadic heritage in still untamed nature.

Referred to as “Indians” and then “American Indians” a little later on, today they are more accurately referred to as the “First Nations” for the indigenous or aboriginal peoples of Canada, “Inuit” for the Aboriginal people of Northern Canada and “Métis" for the people of mixed ancestry.
